Alice Carol N. Handy, known as “Ginny” by all of her grandchildren and by most everyone else who knew her, was born December 11, 1932, in Oakley, Idaho, to Clarence Leroy Nelson and Ila Vera Poulton. She was the youngest of eight children. She passed away in St. George, Utah, on August 17, 2026, at the age of 93.
Carol was the devoted wife of LaDell Handy, lovingly known as “Papa,” and the mother of three daughters, Debra (Jerry) Johnson, Denise (Greg) Bunn, and Jerrolynn (Mark) Noble. She was blessed with 14 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in her heart.
Throughout her life, Carol made a home wherever life took her. She lived in Burley, Idaho; Glenns Ferry, Idaho; Jackpot, Nevada; and, following Papa’s passing, made her home in St. George, Utah. No matter where she lived, her home was always a place where people were welcomed, loved, and cared for.
Carol never met a stranger. Anyone who walked through her door was welcomed as family—and you certainly weren’t leaving her home without being fed! She had a gift for making people feel loved, comfortable, and at home. She had the gift of gab and could always find something to talk about, making even a new acquaintance feel like an old friend.
Throughout her life, Carol worked at Dr. Sutton’s office and later served as the secretary at Jackpot School. She enjoyed reading, especially religious books, and her faith was an important part of who she was. She delighted in sharing the gospel with others and had a genuine desire to share her faith with everyone around her.
Carol had a special fondness for Christmas and decorating. Few things brought her more joy than transforming her home for the holidays, and there was likely never a Christmas quite decorated enough for Carol! Her home was a reflection of her personality—warm, welcoming, full of love, and always ready for whoever might walk through the door.
Carol’s life was filled with people she loved and people who loved her in return. She is now experiencing a special reunion with her beloved husband, Papa, her parents, all of her siblings, and two grandchildren who preceded her in death.
Her family will miss her stories, her hospitality, her faith, her Christmas decorations, and most of all, the way she had a remarkable ability to make everyone she met feel loved. Her legacy lives on through her posterity and the many lives she touched throughout her 93 years.
Though her chair at the table may now be empty, the love she gave so freely will continue to live on in the hearts and homes of all who knew her. And for those lucky enough to have known her as Ginny, she will forever be remembered as a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose home was always open, whose table was always full, and whose heart always had room for one more.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 29 starting at 12:00pm at the Glenn Rest Cemetery, 2005 Frontage Rd, Glenns Ferry, Idaho.
Arrangements are made under the direction of Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 South Bluff Street, St. George, Utah. 435-673-2454.
