Bret Leron Hancey, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, son, and friend, passed away on September 17, 2025, at the age of 66, after a courageous battle with cancer. Surrounded by his loving wife, children, and family, Bret completed his earthly journey with grace and quiet strength.
Born on January 12, 1959, in Logan, Utah, Bret was the first of twin brothers, born with his identical twin into the world. Together, they grew up in the close-knit, bustling household of Lynn and Roxie Hancey, where life was never dull. He spent their childhood days building rafts and huts and catching fish in beautiful Cache Valley, and countless hours hanging out in his dad’s shop—Lynn’s TV and Radio—where the sounds of radios, stereos, and music filled the air.
Bret’s entrepreneurial spirit showed early. At just six years old, he eagerly joined his dad on service calls, charming customers with his natural gift for connecting with people. His love for electronics and audio systems only grew, and by his teenage years, he had become the go-to person for anything related to sound equipment.
As a 13-year-old, Bret had already learned to drive, and his adventurous nature was often on display as he took the wheel with the same confidence that would later define his career and relationships. He and his twin, Bart, were famously known for switching dates, a classic twin mischief that added a touch of humor to their already lively lives. His elaborate pranks, and great sense of humor made the lives of those around him fun all the time.
He devoted his career to Lynn’s Audio and Video, where he worked alongside his father, siblings, and his children. Bringing music, technology, and entertainment to the community gave him joy. Through hard work, integrity, and a quiet commitment to service, Bret built a legacy that continues to touch lives.
A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Bret held a firm belief in eternal families. His eternal marriage to Debbie was his most treasured blessing. He loved teaching children in Primary and later his own grandchildren, making lessons fun while gently guiding them to live close to Jesus Christ. Many will carry with them the joy and peace he brought through his quiet teaching.
Bret’s generosity was boundless, and he was always looking for ways to brighten the lives of others. Whether setting up outdoor movie nights, organizing sound systems for events, purchasing thoughtful gifts, or slipping a gift card into the hands of loved ones, Bret found joy in the small acts of kindness that made a big impact. Even as he faced the pain of his final days, Bret continued to share his humor and warmth with those around him, offering jokes, kind sincere words, and gifts up until the very end.
Bret was a man of few words, and when he did speak, it was with a quiet voice. His presence brought peace to every situation. He taught us all that real strength lies in gentleness, and that the love of family is the greatest gift of all. His relationship with his high school sweetheart and wife, Debbie, and her dedication to him was a model of a marriage of commitment and love. Together, they weathered life’s storms and built a family full of love, laughter, and unwavering support for their children and grandchildren.
One of Bret’s greatest joys was his role as a grandfather. He poured his heart into creating “Grandpaland” in their backyard—a whimsical paradise complete with Grinch and pirate-themed playhouses where his grandchildren could play and imagine. The love and joy Bret and Debbie shared with them will continue to resonate for generations to come.
Bret’s passing leaves a deep void in the lives of all who knew him, but his legacy of love, humor, and generosity will live on. Heaven gained a man of rare kindness, integrity, and quiet wisdom. In his absence, we will carry forward the lessons he taught us: to love deeply, to give freely, find humor daily, and to cherish every moment we have with those we hold dear.
Bret is survived by his devoted wife, Debbie; their children and grandchildren: Jeremy Hancey (son, Rocco), Terry and Jami Hancey (children, Nixon, Krew, and Jagger), Tiffany and Craig Stevenson (children, Sophie, Talia, and Jackson), and Travis and Breann Hancey (children, Ora, Rosie, and Theo). He is also survived by his parents, Lynn and Roxie Hancey, along with many extended family members and friends who were blessed by his example. He will be deeply missed, yet his spirit will remain with us, guiding and inspiring always.
Funeral services will be held Monday, September 29, at 11:00 a.m. at the River Heights Stake Center, 800 S. 600 E. A viewing will be held Sunday evening from 5:00–7:00 p.m. at Allen-Hall Mortuary, and again at the church Monday from 9:30–10:30 a.m. Services are under the direction of Allen-Hall Mortuary.
The passing of Bret L. Hancey has left an immense void in our lives. As we gather to honor his memory, we are reminded of the joy, love, and laughter he shared with everyone. Bret’s spirit was one of generosity and kindness, and he touched so many hearts throughout his life. In this time of sorrow, many have reached out to ask how they can support Debbie and the family.
