DeLamar Anstrom Johnson of Bountiful, Utah died peacefully at his home, Saturday November 30, 2024, at the age of 92. DeLamar (De) was born August 18, 1932, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the second of four children to Eskel Anstrum and Julia Hendrickson Johnson.
De was a loving, and much-loved brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend. He had a great memory of the people, events, and adventures in his life and was great at retelling these stories. From a young age De had a strong interest in all things mechanical, especially automobiles and aviation.
The Korean War was underway in 1950 when, at age 18, De joined the U S Navy Construction Battalions (Seabees) as a Petty Officer Third Class. Having worked part time in
construction and attended the University of Utah in pre-engineering, the Seabees were a good match for his interests. He also looked forward to his marriage to Joanne Nordquist on June 16, 1951. Both were only 18 years old and their marriage lasted more than 65 years.
De was called to active duty in February 1952. He was stationed with the 103 rd Construction Battalion on Guam, where he worked primarily as a surveyor. He injured his back in June 1953 and was hospitalized in Guam. De was transferred to Oakland Naval Hospital. Enroute, he was allowed to come home, in a body cast, for his first visit with his wife since he went on active duty. Back surgery in January 1954 was followed by release from the Hospital
and active duty in June 1954, after hospital stays of one year.
De finished his BS Mechanical Engineering at the University of Utah and enjoyed a long career in Aerospace Engineering. He enjoyed his work Pratt & Whitney, Hercules and the US Air Force at Hill Air Force Base. During his career, he earned an MEA from the University of Utah, an MBA from Auburn University, and graduated from the USAF Air Command and Staff College as a civilian.
Always wanting to be a pilot, De first soloed an airplane on his 40 th birthday, became a private pilot and enjoyed that hobby for several years. Other interests included four-wheeling, motorcycling and camping, particularly in southern Utah. He was proud to be an Eagle Scout
and later served as a Boy Scout leader for handicapped youth. De played the coronet in his youth and in his later years enjoyed playing the tuba in the annual Tubafest at Christmas. Over the past 33 years, De especially enjoyed vintage car touring and the special friendships that he made in the VMCCA.
De will be missed by all whose life he touched!
De is survived by his sons Bryce and Paul (Clare), grandchildren Chelsey and Jake, and great-grandchildren Carter, Chase, Kaylee, Evelyn and Calloway, his brother Ramon (Patsy) Johnson and sister Marva (David) Coombs. Preceded in death by his wife Joanne, his parents and his sister Janet (Richard) Birkenshaw.
A Visitation will be held at 10:30 am Monday December 9, 2024, at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City. A graveside service will follow at Mount Olivet
Cemetery.
