Douglas "Doug" Quayne Sorensen

Oct 23, 1933 Mar 7, 2025

Douglas Quayne Sorensen (91 years old), peacefully passed away in the early morning hours of 7 March 2025. Doug suffered from the onset of dementia and failing health the last several months and was welcomed home by a loving Heavenly Father and numerous family members who have passed before. He was born on 23 October 1933, in Provo Utah, to John Raymond and Sallie Palmer Sorensen. He married the former Janice Marilyn Larsen of Genola, Utah on 25 July 1951 in San Antonio, TX. They were later sealed together as a family in the Logan Temple on 15 July 1966.

He joined the United States Air Force at age 17 and served as a tail gunner on bombers and as a loadmaster on cargo planes. His service took him all over the USA during which time his four sons were born. He served a one-year tour in VietNam in 1969 then retired after 20 years from the USAF in 1971. He and his family (wife Janice and four boys, Shirl, Dennis, J. Chris, and Russell) settled in Sandy (White City), Utah. He truly loved his country and his time serving in the Air Force.

After retiring from military service, he worked as a security guard for the Federal Reserve and a magnesium plant. He then changed his occupation and worked many years with Bullock Glass. He suffered a severe injury on the job but returned to Bullock Glass after a lengthy recovery. He tried to retire several times but always went back to help them with just one more job. After his final retirement, he worked with a food service company at the Salt Palace. He loved working with the public and getting to know people. He never walked away from meeting someone without knowing their name, where they lived, how they were doing, and other fun pieces of information.

He and Janice were avid square dancers with the Pioneer Squares and other groups. This hobby took them all over the United States and even to Russia. They formed life long friendships and served many years on the Utah and National Square Dance Committees.

He loved the gospel and served in various positions in the church including in the library and in the Bishopric. He spent many hours serving his neighbors, seeing to their needs and going to their home at a moment's notice if they called.

He loved his family dearly and enjoyed hunting campouts and camping with immediate and extended family every year. These were always the highlight of the year for family and friends. He welcomed each new family member as they came along and made sure they felt loved and included. He especially enjoyed teasing each grandchild and would do anything he could to support them in all they did or help them in whatever way they needed.

He and Janice have four boys, 16 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren, and 11 great, great, grandchildren as well as many who have married into the family or have joined the family that he would not want to feel like they were forgotten.

He is survived by his loving wife of 73 years; Janice Marilyn Sorensen née Larsen, Shirl Douglas (Mickey) Sorensen, Dennis LaMar (Shelley) Sorensen, Jay Chris (Tamara) Sorensen, and Russell Dale (Rosario “Chiqui”) Sorensen. Siblings; Merta Rae Anderson, John Roger (Jackie) Sorensen, and Gerald Ellis Sorensen. Step-siblings; Hazel Loraine Larsen Thurber, Andrew Wayne Larsen, and David Marke (Jolene) Larsen.
