George McKay Edlund

Aug 28, 1933 Sep 9, 2024

Our beloved father, grandfather and brother, George McKay Edlund passed away on Sept 9, 2024 in Salt Lake City at the age of 91.

George was born in Afton, Wyoming on August 28, 1933 to Oscar Edlund to Luella Cline Edlund.

He attended grade school in Afton, Wyoming and high school in Malta, Idaho. He graduated from high school in 1950.

Summer breaks from school were spent on the family farm in Bridge, Idaho. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Odessa, Texas from 1955 to 1956, which broke up his attendance at Utah State University into two time frames. George earned a Bachelor degree from Utah State University in 1957.

George worked hard as a farm hand throughout his teenage years, helping his dad with the farm property. These were great memories for him and he spoke about this history a lot.

While in his first few years at Utah State University he lived with Dora and Dwayne Peterson (his sister and brother-in-law). During that time he made many memories that for him would endured to his last few months of life.

He married Carolyn Joyce DeGriselle on June 6, 1958 and they spent the next 59 years together until Carolyn's death in 2017.

His Air Force career started in 1958 and his first post was in Texas. He and Carolyn would move to be stationed in Washington State where they enjoyed the gift of their first daughter, Joan. They soon moved back to Utah where their son Brent was born just 18 months later. Utah was a usual post while George was deployed overseas. They then lived in Spain before moving back to Washington State where their daughter Teresa was born. Their last child, Grant, was born in Utah while George served in a combat zone in Vietnam. They lived in many other various locations, including Japan, and had the privilege of vacationing throughout Europe and other locations. Because George loved horses, while stationed in Illinois he decided to get his kids (not himself) some horses to ride and care for. He looked forward to going to the barn after work every day. George spent 21 years and 6 months as a Meteorologist for the Air Force and he thoroughly enjoyed his Air Force career.

After retiring from the Air Force, George decided to moved his entire life and family to Sandy Utah. He bought a house in which he fulfilled a promise to his wife by having only one house for her to live in for the rest of her life...no more moves for Carolyn.

While in Sandy, Utah he accepted work at Ted R. Brown & Associates where he worked his way up in the company to the position of Manager of the Fabrication Engineering Department. The company made a career for George and he worked there for 24 years, his second great career. He really loved his work there until the company was sold. George also spent over 10 years working at a Walmart Neighborhood Grocery store where he worked his way up to an Assistant Manager while in his early to mid 80’s. George also worked at various gas stations as a manager at each location. In addition to all of these jobs he would pickup part-time work as a mechanic. He held an airplane mechanic's license which made him a natural fit.

Even with that work he still found time for his children. He bought many toys to play with as a family such as minibikes, motorcycles, and cars that we would work on together. He also bought boats which we TRIED to work on together. He made sure to carve out time for his kids regardless how busy his work kept him, taking many trips to the High Uinta's, local ski resorts, local lakes for day boating, and of course Lake Powell, which in some cases happened more than once a year.

George’s only move after that was to sell his house in Sandy, Utah and move in with his son Grant, in Salt Lake City, where he lived for the last 8 years of his life.

While living in downtown Salt Lake City, he spoke of his love and joy of attending LDS temple sessions with his sisters and their spouses. These weekly trips filled him with love for the gospel of Jesus Christ, and provided valuable time and memories with his sisters.

George is preceded in death by his parents Oscar and Luella Edlund, his wife Carolyn DeGriselle Edlund, his son Brent Edlund, his sister Dora Peterson (Dwayne), and his brother David Edlund (Georgia). He is survived by his two daughters Joan Alvey (Roger Alvey) Teresa Edlund (Marcie Scarborough), his son Grant Edlund, his four grandchildren Broke Alvey, Autumn Alvey, Jaxson Edlund-Scarborough, Ozcar Edlund-Scarborough, and his two sisters Marie Humphreys (Larry) and Lynda Cook (Lon).

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2024 at 11:00 AM at the Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery (1950 East Dimple Dell Road Sandy, Utah 84092).
