Jay Martin Russell
January 25, 1936 – January 25, 2026
Jay Russell, age 90, passed away peacefully at home on January 25, 2026. He lived a full life defined by service, devotion to family, and his steadfast faith in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Jay was born on January 25, 1936, to Valoran and Irma Russell. From an early age, he developed a strong work ethic, a love for music, and a quiet commitment to the gospel that guided him throughout his life.
While attending the University of Utah, Jay met the love of his life, Carolyn, in a music class. They were married in the Logan Temple in 1959, beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in faith, and shared love of music. Later in life, they had the privilege of serving together by singing in the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, and Pro Musica choral ensemble, experiences that brought them great joy.
Jay’s life was anchored and sustained by a strong belief and knowledge in the gospel of Jesus Christ. As a young man, he served a mission in the Netherlands, where he was honored to serve as part of the Holland Mission Presidency. His missionary service shaped the rest of his life and deepened his commitment to service and leadership.
Jay was greatly devoted to his sweetheart, Carolyn, and his greatest joy was his family and 6 kids. He loved supporting and participating in their various activities including family vacations that often included enjoying the ocean and the amusement parks in Southern CA and visiting relatives in New York. Later as grandkids and great grandkids came along, he loved being with them every July in Park City or by the Millcreek stream in the backyard of their home. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, leading by example with humility, consistency, and love. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, kindness, integrity, and the quiet way he lifted those around him.
After retirement from a career in business, Jay and Carolyn, enjoyed a year serving the people of New York on a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They participated in the opening of the Manhattan, New York Temple and teaching the gospel of Christ in their labors there.
Jay is survived by his wife, Carolyn Russell; his children Juli (Jamie) Dalton, Mike (Julie) Russell, Philip (Mollie) Russell, John (Jodi) Russell, Matt (Ashley) Russell, and Joe Russell; twenty three grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Valoran and Irma Russell, and his siblings, Wayne Russell, Stewart Russell, Calvin Russell, Helen Hillier, and Evelyn Evans.
