Jaynann "Jaynann " Morgan Payne

Oct 16, 1928 Feb 24, 2025

The Dean and Jaynann Payne Family mourns the passing of Jaynann Morgan Payne, “A Beloved Mother to all”. She is the inspirational mother to twelve children, 75 grandchildren, 187 (4 + on their way) great-grandchildren and 2 (+2 ) great-great grandchildren. Jaynann was the daughter of Rulon and Fern Morgan who had only two children and she always lamented not having even a single first cousin. She and Dean delighted in their family as their greatest joy and often quoted the scripture: "Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; So are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them." (Psalm 127). On Monday, 2-24-25, Jaynann was joyfully reunited with her beloved husband, parents and grandparents while surrounded by her family at home. Jaynann courageously endured 2 years of the debilitating effects of a stroke which prevented her from communicating verbally as she had done so eloquently all her life, yet she managed to communicate her love through her beautiful eyes, smiles and hand squeezes.

Jaynann was a Spanish Fork, Utah native born Oct 16, 1928 to J. Rulon Morgan and Luetta Fern Roberts Morgan. She had a fairy tale courtship with Dean W. Payne and they married June 29, 1948, making Provo their life-long home. Jaynann earned her BA degree in English from Brigham Young University. As if raising her large family was not enough, her name was entered into the Mrs. Utah pageant contest by a friend and she was crowned Mrs. Utah in 1967 and went on to become 2nd runner up to Mrs. America. She was an articulate speaker and sought to champion women and their important role in preserving the family as the solid foundation of a happy society. Jaynann had many opportunities to lecture, write, publish, teach and inspire others. She has lectured for CES and BYU Education Weeks programs for 20 years. She was National Director of the Center for Family Studies for the Freemen Institute from 1980 to 1983 as well as board member for the Center of Constitutional Studies. Jaynann battled in the 90's for The Right to Life. Jaynann was the Central Utah Director for Senator Orrin Hatch. She and her husband served a Public Affairs mission in the Philippines from 1995-97 and another 2 yr mission In Salt Lake.

Jaynann is the author of books on women's issues, family history and suicide. Titles: "Footsteps of Faith," "Beauty for Keeps," "To Fulfill Her Promise," her father J. She has also written Ensign articles, and "Family Life Lines," 82 weekly columns in the Manila Chronicle, for which she received the Philippine National Advertising Board's "Golden Pearl Award" for the year 1996. She has received numerous awards, such as 100 Honored Women of Utah, The Eagle Forum Award, and her favorite, "The Guardian of Light" given by the Lighted Candle Society for battling pornography in the Philippines. Jaynann loved the arts, US and Church history and “had a burning in her soul” for mankind’s God-given liberties as protected by our US Constitution. She wrote and produced 3 historical plays, "A Call to Zion," stories of pioneer ancestors; "Turning the Key," vignettes of the first Relief Society in Nauvoo; "Patriots in Petticoats," stories of the women who risked their lives supporting the American Revolution. One of her greatest joys has been her association with the Descendants of the Joseph Sr, and Lucy Mack Smith Families. She presented the Life of Lucy Mack Smith at the very 1st historic Smith Family Reunion Aug, 17, 1972.

The family gratefully remembers Jaynann sought every opportunity to express her love, testify of Jesus Christ, the restoration of the gospel through God’s prophet Joseph Smith, and teach the grandeur of the temple and the Father’s marvelous Plan of Happiness. She invited all to meet at her table and opened her home and heart to many people all over the world. Jaynann welcomed all to be considered her family and kin. She leaves a legacy of light, love, and learning. One of her mottos was: Return Home With Honor. Jaynann always closed her letters to family and friends by saying, “I love you to the moon and back, and I commend you to the Son, who is the Light, Love and Life of the world.”

Jaynann is survived by her 11 children and preceded in death by her husband Dean and her daughter Susan Carole aka Shoshanna Rose.
