Karma Card Childs, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, passed away October 27, 2024 in Riverton, Utah. In her passing, she is survived by her husband: John Douglas Childs; her five children: Christy (Kevin) McCarthy, Steve (Gloria) Childs, Kathleen (Dean) Hayward, Jeff Childs, Ryan (Kathy) Childs; and her youngest brother: Gary (Joan) Card, in addition to 20 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents and nine of her 10 brothers and sisters.
Karma was born May 15, 1931, in Afton, Wyoming, to Walter Clare and Viola Stone Card, the seventh of 11 children. Her dad was an itinerant miner, and her early years were spent in many different locations in Utah wherever he could find work. Though money was often in short supply, the family was amply supplied with love and learned creative ways to make the best of every situation.
Karma graduated from Granite High School in 1949. She later married the love of her life, Douglas Childs, whom she met in 8th grade. Soon afterward they moved to Colorado Springs, where they lived for several years. In 1966 they moved to Springville, Utah, where she worked at Walker Bank while putting her husband through school. Once Doug received his music education degree, they moved to Eskdale, Utah, where Karma taught elementary school for 10 years. She often spoke of her time as a teacher as being some of her fondest memories.
She loved music and played piano, violin, and cello, and instilled a love and appreciation for music in her children. After moving to Eskdale, she took up painting as a hobby and created many beautiful works of art. Her love of beauty and color was also evident in her skills as a gardener. Through her love of gardening, she helped to create beauty wherever she lived, and was very instrumental in planning and creating the beautiful flower gardens in Eskdale. She and her husband also took care of the community orchard and beehives for many years there.
In her later years Alzheimer’s began taking its toll. She was lovingly and faithfully cared for by her husband, who took seriously his commitment of “till death do us part.” Many thanks also to her daughter, Kath, and husband, Dean, for their invaluable help and support during this time.
Karma loved the Lord and was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ her whole life. She was the embodiment of the description in I Peter 3:4 of “the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God.” Her love of her family and children and her faithfulness in following the Lord remain as a precious legacy of her time with us. We love you, Mom, and we’ll see you again in heaven.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, November 1, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. in the Eskdale Auditorium, with the interment at the Eskdale cemetery immediately following.
