Larry Kay Johnson

Jul 28, 1943 Jul 12, 2024

Larry Kay Johnson, age 80, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2024, in Sandy, Utah. Born on July 28, 1943, in American Fork, Utah, he was the curly-haired cherished son of Leo William Johnson and Elva Jeffs.

Larry's life was defined by love and family. He married his high school sweetheart, Judy Anne, and together they welcomed two beautiful daughters, Traci Kae and Tawni Lee (married to Troy Pearmain), who adored him. Larry's legacy continued through his daughters, who blessed him with 18 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild, each of whom held a special place in his heart.

Later in life, Larry found profound happiness with his beloved wife, Kerri Yancey Huff, with whom he shared over 40 wonderful years. Their union brought him two sons, Bart Mattingly and Eric Larry Johnson, who preceded him in death. Larry was proud of his family, which also included 3 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Larry dedicated over 40 years of his career to Kennecott Copper Mine, where his work ethic and commitment were deeply valued. His co-workers lovingly referred to him as “OINK,” a nickname that also inspired his cherished piggy collection. Larry had a passion for gambling and was known to be quite skilled at it. He created a mini-casino in his basement, where he hosted lively poker nights and enjoyed the company of friends.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Kerri Johnson; daughters Traci Fitzgerald and Tawni Pearmain (Troy); daughter-in-law Sherry Mattingly (Bart); 21 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; his brother, Jerry Johnson (Kay); and numerous close cousins.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Elva; siblings Donna May, Carol June, and Bud Lyle; as well as his beloved sons Eric and Bart.

A celebration of Larry's life will take place on Thursday, July 18, 2024, at Larkin Sunset Gardens, located at 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy, Utah. A viewing will be held at 2:00 p.m., followed by a graveside memorial service at 3:30 p.m. All who knew Larry are invited to come together to honor and remember the remarkable life he lived.
