Marjorie Post Howell passed away peacefully on August 19, 2026, at her home in St. George, Utah, just two days after celebrating her 98th birthday. She was born August 17, 1928, in Prescott, Arizona to John Hazen and Jessie Dunlap Post. She was a child of the Great Depression and a teenager during World War II. Much of her younger years were spent working alongside her parents at their Trading Post in Prescott.
On September 14, 1946, at just 18 years old, Marjorie married Jack Kendrick Howell, Sr. in Flagstaff, Arizona. After serving in the military, Jack worked as a miner, which meant moving became a regular part of their life. Over the years, Marjorie lived in twenty eight different places, including Christmas, Arizona, where she lived for just one day. She moved to Utah in 1952, first living in Hurricane and later making St. George her home. She loved reminiscing about life in the simpler days of Southern Utah.
When she wasn’t busy caring for five children, she was active in her community, serving as a Cub Scout Den Mother in the late 1950’s, and in her later years, volunteering at the St. George Art Museum and Dixie Care and Share. Outside of her work and service, she enjoyed walking, quilting, and reading, especially non-fiction.
Her career in the legal field began in 1971 under the guidance of her mentor, Ellis J. Pickett. In 1976, she was duly elected County Clerk, serving three consecutive terms before retiring in 1990. She also served as Court Clerk to Judge J. Harlan Burns for seventeen years. Marjorie took great pride in her work and was known for being capable, organized, and dedicated throughout her career.
Marjorie is survived by her children: Haven (Louis) Krupnick of Longmont, Colorado; Jack Kendrick Howell, Jr. (Celia) of West Jordan, Utah; daughter-in-law Debra Howell of Virgin, Utah, wife of her late son, Breck Howell; Annelaurie Howell of Virgin, Utah; Marjorie Erin Howell of St. George, Utah; and George McKay of Ashland, Oregon, a longtime family friend whom she loved as a son. She is also survived by fourteen grandchildren; twenty six great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and her beloved cat, Luna. She was preceded in death by her father, John Hazen Post; her mother, Jessie Dunlap Post; her four siblings: John H. Post, Jr.; Barbara Post Eckhart; Helen Post Jiles; and Nancy Post Teague; her husband, Jack Kendrick Howell, Sr.; and her son, Breck Howell.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 29, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff St., St. George, Utah. A visitation with the family will be held prior to the service from 9:00 a.m.-9:45 a.m. Interment will take place at Tonaquint Cemetery in St. George, Utah.
