Peggy Smith

Dec 9, 1945 Sep 3, 2024

Our beloved Peggy Jean Penman Smith returned to her heavenly home on September 3, 2024, at the age of 78. She was born in December 1945 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Mildred Penrose Penman and William Earl Penman. She was the fourth of six children, with four sisters and one brother.

Peggy was a resident of Salt Lake City her entire life. Her father served in the U.S. Army during WWII, so as a child she grew up living at a temporary, post-war, air base village near the airport. She attended West High School and graduated in 1964. She served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Salt Lake Pioneer Stake Mission from 1974 to 1976.

Peggy married Gaylon Burdett Smith in the Salt Lake Temple in November 1978. Their two oldest children, Sarah and Charlie, suffered from physical and intellectual disabilities. They passed away at the early ages of 16 months (Charlie, in 1982) and 3 years old (Sarah, in 1983). Their third child, Julie, was born in between Charlie and Sarah passing away. They always maintained faith in the plan of salvation and the hope that, through the power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ, they could one day be reunited with their children again.

Peggy and Gaylon moved to the Rose Park area where they forged meaningful and long-lasting friendships with many dear neighbors. They attended the Riverside First Ward for over 30 years and enjoyed serving in and magnifying their various church callings. Peggy spent much of her free time doing family history research. She was an active member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. She loved to read stories about the pioneers that helped to settle Utah, especially her own ancestors.

Peggy kept herself busy with many hobbies and interests, including: sewing, crocheting, canning, cooking, baking, watercolor painting, and watching the news. She was known to keep her relatives informed on what was going on with her immediate and extended family members and enjoyed keeping in touch with loved ones.

She was active in helping her community. She served as a P.T.A. volunteer and tutor at Jackson Elementary, an election judge, a community emergency response team member, a volunteer for the Special Olympics, and a volunteer at Primary Children’s Hospital. Peggy especially enjoyed serving in several different roles with the Boy Scouts of America, including working with a scout troop and young women’s group specifically designed for teenagers and adults with disabilities.

Peggy was thoughtful, faithful, and service-oriented with a strong and unwavering testimony of the truth of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. She had a deep love for temple work, personal revelation, and worshiping her Savior through service. Though she struggled with various health issues, she was always concerned with the well-being of those around her. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and is cherished by her family and friends.

Peggy is preceded in death by her husband (Gaylon), son (Charlie), daughter (Sarah), and four siblings (Betty Stofer, Joan Kingston, Frank Penman, and Nancy Maughan).

She is survived by her sister (Susan Marks), daughter (Julie Carter), two granddaughters, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A funeral service will be held Friday, September 13, 2024, at 11:00am in the Cottonwood Creek Ward building located at 1250 East 4800 South, Salt Lake City, Utah 84117. Preceding the funeral service, there will be a viewing for friends and family from 9:30-10:45 am. A graveside service will be held at the Salt Lake City Cemetery at 12:30 pm.
