Rick was born in Salt Lake City to Blanche and Dick Buchanan and was a proud big brother to his sister, Rosemary. He graduated from Highland High School in 1965 and went on to attend the University of Utah, where he enjoyed his time as a member of Sigma Nu.

Rick also faithfully served his country. He joined the National Guard and became part of the 328th General Hospital Army Reserve, dedicating more than 20 years of service and retiring with honor as a First Sergeant (E8).

In 1972, Rick married Helen Olsen (later divorced), and together they welcomed four children while living in various locations throughout the Salt Lake Valley. Rick spent almost his entire career in the banking industry, working for a number of financial institutions.

After his children were grown, his work led him to Virginia and then to Oregon, where he continued to make friends and build a life he enjoyed. Even after retiring, Rick remained active in his community. He was proud to serve on credit union management boards and for the local Kiwanis Club, first as Club President and later as Lieutenant Governor, giving back in ways that reflected his lifelong commitment to helping others. He was also an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for his entire life.

Rick was known for his quick wit, warm heart, organization, and remarkable preparedness—whether for a medical emergency, an earthquake, or even a zombie apocalypse, he had the supplies to handle anything.

His children turned to him for guidance on everything, and he always offered a listening ear and thoughtful advice. His positivity, kindness, and willingness to help made him a friend to everyone who knew him.

Some of Rick’s greatest joys included watching University of Utah football, being with his beloved dog and sidekick, Riley, wandering the aisles at Costco, cars, wearing his signature

polo shirts, going out with friends, and above all spending time with his children and grandchildren. To them, he was not only the best father and grandfather but also a true example of loyalty, humor, and love.

Rick is survived by his children Justin (Holly) Buchanan, Holly (Matt) Davis, Jesse (Kristen) Buchanan, and Heidi (Brett) Taylor; twelve cherished grandchildren; and his sister, Rosemary (Cliff) Howard.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 5, with a viewing at 11:00 a.m., a service at noon, and graveside services at 1:00 p.m. All services will take place at the Veterans Cemetery & Memorial, 17111 South Camp Williams Rd., Bluffdale, UT 84065.
