It is with profound sorrow and deep respect that we announce the passing of Richard Elmar Black, who left this world peacefully on May 25, 2025. Born February 5, 1939, to Rial and Kathleen Isom Black in Hurricane UT, he grew to become a devoted husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and friend, his presence was a cherished gift to all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Richard is a man who embodies the apostle Paul's declaration "I have fought the good fight". During his life, he had many opportunities to serve in various callings for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints including as a missionary to Toronto Canada, Bishop, President of the Tennessee Nashville mission from 1984-1987, and Stake Patriarch. In addition to these responsibilities, Richard worked as a Social Work Director for LDS Family Services for 35 years and had a privately owned practice as a Marriage and Family Therapist, providing help and support to those with whom he counseled.
Richard's highest priority in life was his family. He was married on June 16, 1961, to his sweetheart Pamela Wixom and together they raised 7 wonderful children. He worked tirelessly to provide for them and in so doing passed on a legacy of hard work and serving others.
Richard is survived by his spouse Pamela; his 7 children - Cindy Hoffman (Paul), Teri Black, Julie Walker (Aaron), Rick Black (Murranda), Kathleen Harrington (Greg), Marianne Mohammed (Alex) and Natalie Williams (Alan); 18 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, who will continue to honor his memory by leading lives filled with the same dedication and love that he exemplified. He is preceded in death by his father and mother and all his siblings, with whom he is now joyfully reunited.
A service honoring Richard's remarkable life will be held at 12:00 on Saturday, June 7th, 2025, at the Hurricane Stake Center located at 677 South 700 West in Hurricane UT. There will also be a viewing for Richard Friday, June 6th from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and Saturday June 7th from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM. Internment will be at the Hurricane Cemetery located at 225 East 600 North, Hurricane UT immediately following the funeral services.
Richard, you have fought the good fight. You have kept the faith. And now you have run the course. May the eternities bless you with the reward you so richly deserve.
