Roger W. Legare

Aug 11, 1944 Jan 23, 2025

Roger W. Legare, 80, of St. George, Utah, passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at home. He died after a battle with congestive heart failure and COPD.

Roger was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on August 11, 1944, to Raoul (Ray) and Betty Legare. He was raised in Salt Lake City, attending Riverside Elementary, Jordan Junior High, and West High School, where he graduated in 1962. Shortly after, he enlisted in the U.S. Army when he was "unceremoniously" dropped off at Fort Douglas by his father, Raoul. During his service he was stationed in the Philippines and Vietnam.

After returning to Salt Lake, Roger enrolled at the University of Utah, where he earned a degree in accounting. He went on to work in the healthcare industry, where he enjoyed a successful career and retired at a young age. Roger was a lifelong member of Alcoholics Anonymous, celebrating over 33 years of sobriety. Throughout his life, Roger was known for his kindness and generosity. He had a deep passion for serving his community and helping others in any way he could.

In his own words, Roger often said, “I have outlived my expiration date.”

Roger married Kathy Farnworth in 1966, and together they had four children: Matthew, William (Billy), Jill, and Danielle. Roger and Kathy parted ways in 1993. In 1998, Roger met Diane McMakin, who became his life partner. They married and together shared many years of love, exploring the world and living in various places.

Roger had many passions throughout his life. He had a deep love for sailing, owning many boats over the years and cherishing the freedom and serenity they brought him. He also had a fondness for sports cars and motorcycles, appreciating the joy they brought.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Raoul and Betty, and his son William (Billy). He is survived by his wife Diane, son Matthew (Ami), daughters Jill and Danielle (Mike), grandchildren Michael (Jenae), Susan (Justin), Anthony, Noah, and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Bill (Leslee) and Rob (Holly) as well as many nieces and nephews.

Roger was beloved, witty, caring, wise, and a great listener. He will be greatly missed. Roger’s life will be celebrated privately at a later date, and his family is grateful for the many years of love and support from his friends and community.
