Shauna was born March 23, 1970 in Los Angeles, California, and was adopted by Carvel and Betty Whiting about one month later through L.A. County Adoptions. The birth mother requested that the baby go to a home where she would be raised in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and that meant a lot. Big sister, Tamara, was first to see her baby sister! Mom Betty and Dad Carvel both had special feelings upon seeing their new baby for the first time. Shauna was later sealed to them in the L.A. Temple. This little girl was very active, learning to walk at an early age. She liked to carry around a doll suitcase that looked too big for her tiny size.

The family lived in Northridge, California near where a large earthquake struck on Feb. 9, 1971 one morning while they were still in bed. Shauna thought it was such a fun thing, as she jumped happily in her crib after the quake. “Earthquake” was a topic of discussion during the ensuing months. Shauna loved to sing and, unknowingly while singing “I Am a Child of God,” put in the words “… has given me an ‘earthquake’ home with parents kind and dear.”

Shauna was dubbed “The Mystery Baby” by a doctor when he puzzled over Shauna’s illness that turned out to be pneumonia. Since that time, Shauna’s illnesses have often been mysteries to doctors.

She kept parents busy when a young child! Her mom recorded this: “She just helps herself—like she gets a jar of pickles out of the fridge when she wants a picko. If she’s in the tub and needs a washcloth, she just gets out and gets it (so has to be watched every minute!)” She climbed, pedaled her trike, and learned fast how to do complicated things. Shauna liked to say her own prayers by age 2.

She kept everyone in a state of laughter after her bath as she always dressed her own self in her big sister’s old hand-me-downs that Shauna had not yet grown into. At that age, she wouldn’t let mom put clothes on her. She would grab them away and say, “My turn, Mom!” or “MY do it MYSELF.” For example, she wore a dress backwards so she could zip it up herself.

At 2-years old, she would stand on her head or do cartwheels. At 6 ½ years was enrolled in gymnastic training at the U. of U. and later, Intermountain Gymnastics. She also was, for a time, on the Brighton Highschool Gymnastics team. She and dad Carvel would go on all the wild rides at Lagoon, and she loved them, but it did not go well for him.

Shauna was, above all, a very social girl from a young age. One day, as a tiny child, she asked a neighbor to take her to day-time Relief Society because her mom was sick and Shauna couldn’t stand to miss nursery. Three-year old Shauna’s first friend was Onika and they became forever friends when they were just toddlers. Shauna adores all the many friends she has made in this life.

She married Darin Fitt. Years later, they divorced, but remained friends. He recently said, “Her heart was golden.” They sometimes had needy people stay with them. Shauna is an example of showing unconditional and forever love. She was so giving, forgiving, loving, caring and kind, a symbol of Christ-like love. She often was the neighborhood little nurse as a child, helping wounded kids by applying band-aids, and also mothered little neighborhood babies, as well as her baby brother, Douglas, followed by Craig and Paul. Her childhood cat got lots of loves. Shauna was very close to her Grandma Kay Whiting who lived with the family for 6 years.

Shauna enjoyed the diving class at Midvale Middle School and loved diving backwards off the diving board. She loved being in a Russian Dance Class, and also enjoyed playing flute in the Butler Middle School marching band. She took piano lessons and could do whatever she put her mind to do! She won the 4 th Grade chess contest at her school, and also was the fastest at doing the Rubik's Cube. She loved singing as a child, and sang solos at the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and a 1976 Regional Primary stake leaders meeting, and also at age 7 sang a solo “As I Have Loved You” at church with Tamara on the violin. When Shauna was 15, she was chosen to work as a “Candy Striper” at Alta View Hospital.

She later became an award-winning dental assistant and also did phlebotomy work for a doctor’s office. She attended Snow College and BYU, each for one year. Although she held various jobs through the years, even loving to work with brother Craig in real estate, her favorite job was the last one where she served special-needs people, especially Amber, a special-needs girl she met years ago at Special Needs Mutual where Shauna volunteered. “Shauna’s Amber” is like another sister to her.

Shauna loved, years ago, meeting her birth mother and later, her natural father. She relished joyful times with them and their families.

She had many operations in her lifetime, starting with her first foot surgery when she was 13 years old. By the age of 56, she had endured much suffering because of her back, but in recent times had found much joy, hope, and peace through coming closer to our Savior, Jesus Christ. Her countenance had totally changed. Shauna’s greatest joy is being a grandmother, “Nana,” to her 4 adorable granddaughters. They couldn’t have been more blessed than to have a grandmother like her! She loves them and always talked about how they loved her. They are her world, along with her daughter, son, and cat, Luna!

Some of Shauna’s final words sent in a text were “I made it” when she arrived safely to visit her birth mother, Cindy, in Panguitch on August 6, 2026. Her final words to mom Betty that night were, “I love you, mom!” She passed peacefully August 7, 2026 in her sleep.
