Whittie “Hoi” Lee, 88, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones after ongoing health complications. He was born on January 13, 1938, in Guangdong, China, to parents Ngan Ming Lee and Lau Ching Sin Lee. He was the only son and the youngest of four siblings.

Hoi met his beloved wife, Mimi, while they were both working in a garment factory. They were married for 65 wonderful years. Together, they were blessed with four sons: Eddie, Alan, David, and Sammy. In 1968, Hoi and Mimi immigrated from Hong Kong to Utah in search of a better life for their family. Leaving behind everything familiar, they bravely built a new life with determination and hope for their children’s future.

Hoi worked as a chef for over 40 years and fulfilled his dream of owning his own restaurant. In 1982, he opened the Chinese-American restaurant New Gardens Café, which he proudly operated for seven years before selling it in 1989. A dedicated and tireless worker, Hoi spent long days—often up to 14 hours—working side by side with his wife, seven days a week, including their sons. The restaurant only closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. He showed his love through actions rather than words, quietly providing for his family and always putting others first. He instilled the values of hard work and perseverance in his children, leading by example every day.

Though Hoi was a man of few words, he was always known for his warm smile. He enjoyed fishing, traveling to Wendover to play blackjack, and spending time with family and friends. He built lasting friendships wherever he went, especially during his daily visits for coffee, where he became a familiar and friendly face. Simple pleasures brought him the most joy, whether it was a good cup of coffee, a trip to the buffet, or sharing quiet moments with friends. He especially loved McDonald’s coffee and could often be found there for hours, either socializing or quietly enjoying time himself with endless refills.

Hoi was preceded in death by his parents, Ngan Ming Lee and Lau Ching Sin Lee; his two loving sisters; his daughter-in-law, Lisa (Eddie); and his grandson, Ryan. He is survived by his older sister; his devoted wife, Mimi; his sons—Eddie (Bobbi), Alan (Kim), David (Sadeth), and Sammy (Michelle); seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
